Happy Hump Day Gorgeous!
After 16 glorious days in Gulf Shores, Alabama with my mom & step dad, I’m heading home — and that means hopping on a plane. You know, that magical flying tin can where even people under 6 feet tall complain about the lack of space. 🤣
Flying in a plus-size body isn’t exactly what I would chalk up as a fun spa day, but it's doable, and you don’t owe anyone an apology for taking up space.
(Now, I will admit that I often am privileged enough to fly first class and that is 100% my preference as a plus-size traveler and this time we were able to swing first class on my way to Gulf Shores but not on the way back (we booked two one way tickets because it was cheaper to do that).)
First things first: the seat belt extender! This is NOT a scarlet letter. There's nothing to be embarrassed about asking for one. The moment I step on that plane and see a flight attendant at the door, I simply say, "Hi! I need a seat belt extender, please." That's it! And they hand me one. (of all the times I've flown there has been once, possibly twice, they didn't have one at the door and had to bring it to my seat!)
Wear comfortable clothes! There's nothing worse (to me) than wearing a regular bra, pants, etc. for long travel days. I prefer sports bra, tank top & leggings. It also helps keep me cooler because being hot on top of a long travel day makes it even ickier!
Use the bathroom. If you're like me you may be afraid to go to the bathroom during a flight because you're not sure you'll fit. This was me for a long time! But newsflash - I fit! It's not the most spacious place but my size 22/24 body fits so I can do my business.
And about that space — airplanes are uncomfortable for a lot of bodies, not just ours. Tall folks fold up like accordions, broad-shouldered people squish in like sardines, and everyone battles for the armrest like it’s the last cookie on the plate.
The truth is, planes weren’t built with body diversity in mind. But your body still deserves to travel, to explore, and to take up every inch of space it needs.
So, if you’re feeling anxious about your next flight, remember this:
- You’re not a burden.
- You don’t have to shrink yourself to make others comfortable.
- You are worthy of every adventure your heart desires.
Enjoy the rest of your Wednesday, Reader!
